Phoenix,
AZ - On Saturday, October 22, 2005, 215 members from across
Arizona met at Boys & Girls Clubs of
Metropolitan Phoenix, Rosenzweig Branch
to participate in the 3rd annual Techathalon.
Representing the diverse communities of
Arizona, Club members demonstrated the
true meaning of teamwork in four
challenge areas encompassing graphic
design, technical know-how, productivity
software mastery, and problem solving
skills.
In addition, members had the opportunity
to explore a variety of hands-on
science, technology and engineering
activities in the Exploratorium.
This year's Exploratorium featured green
screen pictures with Star Wars
costumers, electric guitar lessons,
polymer separation (a.k.a. slime making)
and cotton ball catapults!
Arizona Attorney General Terry Goddard
kicked off the event with a reminder to
all participants to practice Internet
safety, providing each participant with
a bracelet reminding them to "Surf Safe,
Surf Smart!" As a special bonus,
the Attorney General invited his special
friend, Clicky, the national spokesrobot
for
Netsmartz, to talk to members
about Internet safety. Arriving
via a real time digital feed, Clicky
answered Club member questions about his
job and his advice for surfing the web
safely.
Club members participating in this
year's Techathalon learned the value of
teamwork and technology:
"I learned that you should never give
up on your team."
~Joey, age 6
"I learned that teamwork will help
you a lot and
that multiple heads are better than
one."
~Luiz, age 15
"I learned that teamwork requires
patience, cooperation and friendship."
~Briana, age
13
"I like the face that Techathalon
gives kids a chance to express their
opinion, show their knowledge and learn
all at the same time."
Kristie, age
13
"My favorite part was that I got to
spend all day learning about
technology."
Drake, age 10
Congratulations to all Techathalon
participants and we look forward to
seeing everyone again next year!
Techathalon would not be possible
without the support of community
businesses and volunteers. Special
thanks to Intel, Cox Communications,
NPCE, SIT, nFocus Software, APS,
Chandler Gilbert Community College,
nPower Arizona and all those who
supported this year's event.
